Best Bollywood Songs of 2014 - My Picks

This year was clearly about the fresh talent on the block giving tough competition to the existing stalwarts. Is it time to hand over the reins to the new and extremely talented generation of musicians? Let's check out who scored over whom ...

#14. Chaar Kadam

This one just about made into the list ... another very fresh song given to us by the 'Shantanu-Swanand-Shaan' trio who have created magic in the past as well. Remember the evergreen 'Behti hawa sa tha woh' from 3 Idiots ...

Movie: PK
Lyrics: Swanand Kirkire
Music: Shantanu Moitra
Vocals: Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal

#13. Mast Magan

Glad to have a Shankar Ehsaan Loy melody on the list ... Another official trio who never ceases to amaze us with the breadth of their music. It is one of those songs in which you can get lost into with your eyes closed and go 'magan' about ...

Movie: 2 States
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy
Vocals: Arijit Singh, Chinmayi Sripada

#12. Banjaara

After making people go crzay with 'Tum hi ho' last year, Mithoon returned this year with this calm and engrossing melody. The voice of Mohd. Irfan adds the required depth touching different notes of the heart throughout the song.

Movie: Ek Villain
Lyrics: Mithoon
Music: Mithoon
Vocals: Mohd. Irfan

#11. Manwa Laage

The list will be incomplete without mentioning this romantic number from Happy New Year. Vishal & Shekhar kind of take us back 7 years by soothingly blending in Dafli into the song without going overboard (Remember the retro track 'Dhoom Taana' from OSO). The voices of Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh effortlessly harmonize to create a perfect symphony of romance and depth.

Movie: Happy New Year
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Music: Vishal Shekhar
Vocals: Shreya Ghoshal, Arijit Singh

#10. Dil Ka Mizaaj Ishqiya

Somehow just can't seem to get enough of this song ... truly an ethereal experience recreated by another wonderful trio Gulzar-Vishal-Rahat (Remember 'Dil to bachcha hai ji' from the prequel). The whistle and the voice just lingers on ... true class from the legends.

Movie: Dedh Ishqiya
Lyrics: Gulzar
Music: Vishal Bhardwaj
Vocals: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

#9. Daawat-e-Ishq

This might be the only peppy number on the list ... but it truly deserves its spot. The energy throughout the song and the chemistry between the singers is just infectious. The romance is piping hot and literally served on the plate with love and conviction. The music of Sajid-Wajid and the voices of Javed and Sunidhi have the strength to lift the song and your mood to another level ... Truly mesmerizing!

Movie: Daawat-e-Ishq
Lyrics: Kausar Munir
Music: Sajid-Wajid
Vocals: Javed Ali, Sunidhi Chauhan

#8. Aaj Phir Tumpe Pyaar Aaya Hai

The new version of the song is quite 'hat ke' from the original Laxmikant-Pyarelal composition (from the1988 movie 'Dayavan'). Recreated by Arko (another rising star on the block), the song retains the original tune but adds a very vibrant and contemporary appeal. The voices of Arijit and Samira make it even more melodious and enchanting. Unavoidable and unforgettable!

Movie: Hate Story 2
Lyrics: Aziz Qaisi, Arko
Music: Arko
Vocals: Arijit Singh, Samira Koppikar

#7. Harjaiyaan

The list cannot be complete without an Amit Trivedi number, and 'Harjaiyaan' scores on all aspects. The song beautifully captures the hurt and the longing of separation without being irrational and dramatic about it. The lyrics are very relevant and meaningful, and you can feel the heavy heart and emotions flowing in the singing of Nandini. In the movie, this song marks the beginning of the transition/journey of the protagonist from 'Rani' to 'Queen', fitting the situation very well.

Movie: Queen
Lyrics: Anvita Dutt
Music: Amit Trivedi
Vocals: Nandini Srikar

#6. Manchala

It is one of those songs, which takes you back into the memory lanes of the trials and tribulations of finding and losing love. One of the most melodious and romantic compositions of the year, kudos to Vishal-Shekhar for creating this number. Shafqat and Nupur have rendered it beautifully and they hit all the right chords of the heart. It has also been seamlessly interwoven into the climax of the movie helping it culminate into a 'happy ending'.

Movie: Hasee Toh Phasee
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
Music: Vishal & Shekhar
Vocals: Shafqat Amanat Ali & Nupur Pant

#5. Samjhawan

Its the perfect 'Romeo-Juliet' number of the year. Arijit and Shreya express love through their voices in the most pure, innocent and convincing manner. Originally sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for another album, this one recreates, if not enhances, the same magic. The lyrics in Punjabi are immaculate to express and pledge your love.

Movie: Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania
Lyrics: Kumaar & Ahmad Anees
Music: Sharib Toshi & Jawad Ahmed
Vocals: Arijit Singh & Shreya Ghoshal

#4. Ishq Bulaava

As mentioned appropriately in its Youtube introduction, 'It's the heart and not the ears that hear when love beckons'. This song truly captures the moment when one hears love calling - the confusion, the hesitation and the happiness. Kudos to Sanam and Shipra for the sweet rendition of this soft and romantic Punjabi composition.

Movie: Hasee Toh Phasee
Lyrics: Kumaar
Music: Vishal & Shekhar
Vocals: Sanam Puri & Shipra Goyal

#3. Baarish

Mithoon does it again! The year 2014 started with the youth swooning over the song 'Baarish'. The composition is soothingly melodious and romantically ethereal. Touches the heart every time you listen to it and then you feel the urge to listen to it once more. With this song, Mohd. Irfan has certainly arrived in the music industry.

Movie: Yaariyaan
Lyrics: Mithoon
Music: Mithoon
Vocals: Mohd. Irfan, Gajendra Verma

#2. Galliyan

The song 'Gallliyan' has for certain ruled all the 'galliyan' of the country this year. This one's a gem from Ankit Tiwari, who has both composed and sung it, truly from the heart. It has an amazing harmony of keyboard, violin and flute which gives it the magical appeal and makes it the no. 2 song on this list.

Movie: Ek Villain
Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir
Music: Ankit Tiwari
Vocals: Ankit Tiwari

#1. Muskurane

Arijit Singh is on a roll, and this one reinforces that he is here to stay. The song 'Muskurane ki wajah' has the required depth and melody in the lyrics as well as its rendition. In the movie, it is rightfully placed capturing the emotions and struggles of a family trying to make a living in an entirely new city. It is a song which talks about the strength of family bonds despite the hardships and struggles. For its ingenuity, its soul and the way it grows on you, this song takes the top spot on the list.

Movie: Citylights
Lyrics: Rashmi Singh
Music: Jeet Gannguli
Vocals: Arijit Singh

Special Mention:

There were 2 songs this year which deserve a special mention. It would be unfair to include them in the above list as they clearly stand a class apart.

#Special Mention 1. Soney Do

The track has a sombre mood, is haunting yet melodious. Lyrics are thought provoking and the singing is soulful. The music combines the western beats into Indian classical. This song is sure to give you goosebumps, for its realism and subtlety.

Movie: Citylights
Lyrics: Rashmi Singh
Music: Jeet Gannguli
Vocals: Arijit Singh

#Special Mention 2. Heera

The track beautifully combines the philosophical dohas from Sant Kabir into a beautiful melody. Being the last track of the movie, Rahman ensures that it rightfully summarizes and delivers the message in the most poetic and genuine manner. Shweta Pandit does a fabulous job with her soothing voice, layered between the enchanting sounds of violin and santoor. Definitely one of the masterpieces of this year!

Movie: Highway
Lyrics: Sant Kabir
Music: A. R. Rahman
Vocals: Shweta Pandit
